Grab rail fitting in Tetbury

A grab rail is only as good as what it is screwed into. That is the bit most people get wrong. The rail itself is fine; you can buy a decent one from any mobility shop. The question is whether it will still be in the wall when someone puts their full weight on it at seven in the morning.

Why the wall matters more than the rail

Plasterboard on its own will not hold. A tile without solid wall behind it will crack. The older Cotswold stone you find in the Georgian houses along Long Street and Chipping Street needs different fixings to a modern stud wall on one of the newer estates towards the edge of town.

I check the wall first. I choose fixings for what is actually there. Then I drill.

Listed buildings

Tetbury has its share of listed properties, particularly around the centre and in the surrounding villages. If a wall has any kind of heritage restriction, I will ask about listed building consent before I touch it. Better to have a conversation about it beforehand than to put a hole in something that should not have one.

Where grab rails usually go

By the front or back door where there is a step. Next to the bath or shower. Top or bottom of the stairs. Beside the toilet. In a narrow hallway with an uneven floor.

If you are not sure of the best position, I will stand in the spot and test it before I drill anything. It needs to be where your hand naturally reaches, not where the wall is most convenient.

How long it takes

A single rail is around 30 to 45 minutes. Two or three in one visit is common and usually fills a couple of hours. I arrive with a drill, stud detector, spirit level, and a selection of fixings for different wall types. Once the rail is up I test it with real pulling force before I leave.

Pricing

First hour £55, each hour after that £35. One rail usually falls inside the first hour. Three rails is typically around two hours. Tetbury is outside Cirencester so a small mileage charge covers the drive. I will quote the full figure before you book.
